These non-natural diamonds are known by more than one name. They are known by names of Man Made Diamonds, Synthetic, Artificial, lab-grown or laboratory created. It is first made by in 1954 by General Electric. Synthetic diamond has same attributes like natural diamonds like durability, hardness and refractive index – but with one difference that it is made by man and not naturally produced. One important point that synthetic diamonds should not be confused with simulant diamonds like moissanite, glass and cubic zirconia. They are not basically diamonds but simulant of diamond.
It is not easy to differentiate between natural and artificial diamonds. They are physically and chemically same. As these diamonds are visually and chemically same as natural diamond so only an expert in this field can differentiate between them.
Despite of the invention of artificial diamond in 1954, no man made diamond were seen in market until 1990. The reason behind this delay was that General Electric took many years to produce a diamond of same quality as natural diamond. Another reason behind this delay was it cost more money than natural diamond. So they were interested to produce a diamond of with quality of natural diamond but with low cost, this was the only way to attract customers from natural diamond segment.
This expedition of high quality and low cost diamond continues for some years and finally a company by the name of Gemesis succeeded in achieving this goal. Gemesis produced a diamond with same attributes like hardness, durability and refractive index of natural diamond but with reduced cost. Now Gemesis is producing white diamonds and other color diamonds as well. They are selling these diamonds for 1/3 of natural diamond price. There is supply shortage problem in artificial diamonds market. This is the reason that synthetic diamonds are hard to find in market.
It is relative cheaper when compared to natural diamond of same quality attributes. But as like natural diamond this lab generated diamond prices goes up and down on basis of carat (weight), cut, clarity and color. Gemesis is well known name in this field currently charging 20 to 30% of natural diamond price with same carat, cut, clarity and color.
